NASAO Center for Aviation Research and Education

Established in 1986, the NASAO Center for Aviation Education and Research is a nonprofit organization (501C) that recognizes the vital role aviation education has assumed in our contemporary society. The Center, through its relationship with NASAO and the states, is in a unique position of being able to collect and market state-derived aviation information. The Center also advocates for aviation modules in the K-12 education system to foster enthusiasm for the diverse careers found within the Aviation Industry.

The Center is governed by a Board of Directors, of which NASAO is a designated member. The Board is a managing body consisting of five members, three designated from NASAO Executive committee and two selected from among the membership of NASAO.

Beginning in 1997, NASAO and FAA have partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide aviation education activities within states through the Aviation Education Outreach Initiative. This initiative promotes aviation education, including but not limited to aeronautics, engineering and science. This includes organizing aviation education councils at the state level, collaborating to develop aviation education resources online and developing awards and grant proposals that fund relevant activities. Activities have included: Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camps, centennial flight celebration events, aviation education career-days, classroom assistance, teacher workshops, and the Federal Aeronautic International Art Contest.

Since 1989 the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale has sponsored the International Aviation Art Contest to challenge young people to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. The contest supports NASAO’s objective to increase aviation youth education by motivating youth of all ages to become more familiar with aeronautics, engineering and science.
